01 · Overview

What Appen is

Appen is an Australian, publicly listed AI data company, founded in 1996, that has paid remote contributors for language and data work for many years. Through its contributor portal, Appen Connect, and the newer CrowdGen brand, people apply to individual projects in data collection, transcription, relevance rating and chatbot evaluation, many of them tied to a specific language or country. It is one of the more accessible entry points for non-specialists, with real trade-offs: uneven work volume, pay that varies sharply by country, and qualification steps that can be long and unpaid.

Commitment. Independent contractor work. Micro-tasks and data collection are fully flexible, while longer evaluation projects can set weekly minimum and maximum hours. How much work is available depends on which projects are open for your language and country.

02 · The work

What you would actually do

  1. 01Evaluate and rank chatbot responses, and write prompts, in a specific language
  2. 02Rate search results, ads and content for relevance and quality
  3. 03Record speech, photos or video for data-collection projects
  4. 04Transcribe and annotate audio, text, images and video
  5. 05Language-specific review, translation checks and dialect work
  6. 06Short micro-tasks paid per task, on some projects

When you are paid. Hourly projects on Appen Connect have historically run on a monthly cycle: contributors submit an invoice early in the month for the previous month's work and are paid later that month. Per-task and data-collection work is paid on each project's terms. The current cadence was not re-verified.

Pay is set per project. For hourly work it depends largely on country of residence and language, so the same kind of task can pay very differently from one market to another. Long-running evaluation projects have typically been paid hourly, with contributors recording their time and invoicing monthly. Micro-tasks pay per task, and data-collection projects usually pay a fixed amount per accepted submission. Qualification exams are usually unpaid. No platform-wide figure is given here, because rates are set per project and country. Check the rate shown for a project before investing time in its qualification.

04 · Who gets in

Requirements and difficulty

Assessed

2 / 4

A qualification test decides, so preparation pays off.

  • Age 18 or over
  • An accurate, complete profile: country of residence, languages and dialects, education and devices
  • For many evaluation projects, fluency in the project language and recent residence in the target country
  • Identity verification and signed contributor agreements for some projects
  • A computer and reliable internet; some data-collection projects need a specific smartphone or recording setup
  • Passing a project's qualification exam where one is required

05 · How to get in

From sign-up to first paid task

  1. 1

    Register

Create a contributor account on Appen's contributor portal and verify your email. The portal is Appen Connect, increasingly presented under the CrowdGen brand.

  2. 2

    Complete your profile

Add residency, languages and dialects, education, work history and devices. Projects are matched on these details, so a thin profile sees fewer openings.

  3. 3

    Apply to projects

Browse the projects open to you and apply to those that match your language and location.

  4. 4

    Qualify

Complete each project's onboarding: agreements and sometimes identity checks. For evaluation work there is also an exam on detailed guidelines, which can take several hours and is usually unpaid.

  5. 5

    Start work

Once approved, you get access to the project's tools. Quality and productivity are monitored throughout.

  6. 6

    Record time and get paid

On hourly projects, log your time and submit a monthly invoice; per-task work accrues automatically. Payouts have gone to PayPal or Payoneer, depending on your country; confirm the options in your account.

06 · Tips

How to get accepted and stay active

  1. 01

Complete every profile field, including each language and dialect you speak fluently and every device you own. Project matching depends on them.

  2. 02

Apply widely, but only to projects you are genuinely eligible for. Residency and language claims are checked.

  3. 03

Before an exam, read the guidelines end to end and take notes. Evaluation exams test close application of the rules, so check each answer against the text.

  4. 04

Take exams in one focused sitting with the guidelines open, and use the full time allowed rather than rushing.

  5. 05

Never use a VPN, a second account or another person's identity. Each can get you permanently removed.

  6. 06

Report time accurately and stay within any weekly hour limits. Overbilling and low productivity both put your access at risk.

  7. 07

Watch your email, including spam. Invitations and onboarding steps can carry deadlines.

07 · The verdict

The good and the not so good

Strengths

  • Founded in 1996 and listed on the ASX, with a long public track record
  • Broad language coverage, including African languages
  • Entry-level projects that need no degree or specialist background
  • A wide mix of work: evaluation, data collection, transcription and generative-AI tasks
  • Remote and flexible, with established payout routes

Drawbacks

  • Work volume is uneven, and Google ended its contract with Appen in 2024 (announced in January, effective in March), removing a large source of evaluation work
  • Pay varies sharply by country and can be low in many markets
  • Qualification exams can be long and are usually unpaid
  • Long waits between registering, qualifying and receiving work are commonly reported
  • A June 2020 data breach exposed Appen user records, including names, email addresses and bcrypt-hashed passwords, according to Have I Been Pwned
  • Past pay disputes: US raters on Appen's former Google projects campaigned with the Alphabet Workers Union over pay and conditions before that contract ended

08 · In Africa

Some African countries or projects

Partial and project by project; not confirmed country by country. Appen has long recruited for language-specific work that includes African languages and markets, but no public country list exists to check against: an independent Kenyan guide, checked in October 2026, notes that CrowdGen publishes none. Registration has historically been open broadly, so applicants in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt can usually create a profile. Whether paid work is open to them depends on current projects for their language and country of residence. Where PayPal cannot receive payments, Payoneer is the more practical route if it is offered. None of this was verified country by country.

Where it hires. Recruits internationally. Appen describes its crowd as spanning a very large number of countries and languages, but eligibility is decided project by project. It usually depends on language, country of residence and, for some evaluation work, a period of recent residence in that country. No public country list was found; an independent Kenyan guide, checked in October 2026, says CrowdGen does not publish one.

Never use a VPN or someone else's identity to get around a country restriction. Platforms verify identity and location, and accounts caught doing it are closed, often with unpaid earnings.

09 · Questions

Appen, answered

Is Appen legitimate?

Yes. Appen Limited is an ASX-listed Australian company, founded in 1996, that has paid a global contributor workforce for many years. Apply only through Appen's own portals and never pay a fee to apply.

Did Appen lose its Google work?

Yes. Appen announced in January 2024 that Google was ending its contract, effective in March 2024, which removed a large block of search and ads evaluation work. Appen still runs other evaluation, data-collection and generative-AI projects, but volume for a given language or country can be uneven.

How does Appen pay?

By project. Hourly projects have used a monthly invoice cycle, while micro-tasks and data collection pay per task or per accepted submission. Payouts have gone to PayPal or Payoneer, depending on what works in your country; confirm the current options in your account.

Are the qualification exams paid?

Usually not. Some evaluation exams require studying long guidelines and can take several hours, so choose projects you are eligible for and can commit to.

Can I work on Appen from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa or Egypt?

Possibly. Appen has run language-specific projects in African markets, but it publishes no country list, so paid work depends on what is open for your language and country at the time. Complete your profile fully, then check which projects you can apply to.
