01 · Overview

What DataAnnotation is

DataAnnotation is the contributor platform run by Surge AI (Surge Labs), a major supplier of human training data to AI labs. Accepted workers choose projects from a dashboard, at hourly rates shown upfront. The work includes comparing and writing chatbot responses, fact-checking, coding and expert-domain tasks. You get in by passing a single-attempt assessment, and applications are reportedly accepted only from the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Commitment. Fully flexible. You choose projects and hours from the dashboard, with no fixed schedule. You work as an independent contractor with no guaranteed volume of work, and workers report weeks with little or none.

02 · The work

What you would actually do

  1. 01Compare chatbot responses and judge which is more helpful, accurate or safe
  2. 02Write prompts and high-quality reference responses
  3. 03Research and fact-check AI-generated answers
  4. 04Review, debug and write code for model training
  5. 05Solve and evaluate advanced STEM problems, often at graduate level
  6. 06Review chatbot responses in English and a second language

03 · Pay & payouts

What it pays, and how

Pay range

$20–$100/hr

When you are paid. You request a transfer once earnings clear a review hold. Workers commonly report the hold as about 7 days after submission for hourly work and about 3 days for per-task work. The FAQ says PayPal deposits arrive within a few days of a transfer request.

Pay is mostly hourly, at a per-project rate shown on the dashboard, though some projects pay per task. DataAnnotation has long advertised about $20/hr for general work and $40/hr for coding (Time, 2024). Company posts and third-party guides from 2026 cite higher starting points: about $25+/hr for generalist work (multilingual from $20+), $40+/hr for STEM, $40 to $50+/hr for coding and about $50+/hr for professional fields. Workers report generalist dashboards starting around $20/hr, with small bonuses on 'priority' projects. All of these are starting rates, not guaranteed hours, and the company's own figures are inconsistent. At the top end, DataAnnotation's own job board lists up to $150+/hr for coding and up to $125+/hr for math and law roles. Rates depend on the project and your qualifications, and you must log your time accurately.

04 · Who gets in

Requirements and difficulty

Highly selective

4 / 4

Specialist credentials and a demanding assessment.

  • Residence in an accepted country: reportedly the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand
  • Fluent written English and the ability to follow detailed instructions on your own
  • Generalist track: a completed or in-progress bachelor's degree, or equivalent real-world experience
  • Coding track: working ability in one or more programming languages
  • STEM and professional tracks: advanced credentials (often a master's or PhD) or professional experience in fields such as law, finance or medicine
  • A PayPal account
  • A computer and a reliable internet connection

05 · How to get in

From sign-up to first paid task

  1. 1

    Create an account

Register at app.dataannotation.tech/worker_signup with your name, email address and phone number (with country code). There is no fee.

  2. 2

    Choose your assessment

Where more than one Starter Assessment is offered (for example, general or coding), pick the one that matches your strongest skill.

  3. 3

    Complete the Starter Assessment

DataAnnotation estimates about an hour, but applicants report 90 minutes to three hours. You can take it only once, and applicants report that no timer is shown.

  4. 4

    Complete any further assessments

Some applicants are then asked to do a longer core or subject assessment, reported at around 14 to 15 tasks.

  5. 5

    Wait for a decision

The FAQ says approval emails go out within a few days of submission, but applicants often report one to four weeks. Rejections are usually not emailed, so long silence generally means you were not accepted.

  6. 6

    Unlock projects through qualifications

Once you are accepted, your dashboard lists available projects and their rates. Taking the qualifications offered is the main way to get more and better-paid work. Some qualifications are paid and some are not.

  7. 7

Work, log time and transfer earnings

Report your time accurately. Once earnings clear the review hold, transfer them to PayPal.

06 · Tips

How to get accepted and stay active

  1. 01

You get one attempt. Set aside an uninterrupted block of two to three hours, even though the official estimate is about an hour.

  2. 02

Read every instruction before you begin, and follow required formats exactly. A correct answer in the wrong format can count against you.

  3. 03

Explain your reasoning in specific, complete sentences. Name the exact flaws in a response rather than just calling it 'better' or 'worse'.

  4. 04

When a task asks about accuracy, check claims against reliable sources and say what you checked.

  5. 05

Put thoroughness ahead of speed. Reviewers look for accuracy and depth, not how fast you finish.

  6. 06

Choose the assessment that matches your strongest credential. If you code, take the coding track, which is linked to higher-paid projects.

  7. 07

Write every answer yourself, in your own words. The work exists to capture human judgment.

07 · The verdict

The good and the not so good

Strengths

  • High published starting rates: about $20 to $25+/hr for generalist work, and $40 to $50+/hr for coding, STEM and professional projects.
  • Full control over which projects you take and when you work. There is no fixed schedule.
  • Each project shows its rate before you start.
  • Run by Surge AI, which is reported to be profitable, with an estimated $1.2B in revenue in 2024.
  • No application fees, and many workers report that PayPal payouts arrive reliably.

Drawbacks

  • Applications are reportedly accepted only from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, so residents of Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt cannot apply.
  • The Starter Assessment allows a single attempt and gives no feedback. Silence is the usual form of rejection.
  • PayPal is the only payout method.
  • Work volume is volatile. Workers report dry spells and projects that vanish within a day. Some also report accounts closed with little explanation, sometimes with balances withheld.
  • A proposed class action filed in May 2025 alleges that workers are misclassified as contractors and that training time goes unpaid. The claims are unproven.
  • In 2025, Surge AI was reported to have left internal project documents publicly accessible. The DataAnnotation site does not name its parent company.

08 · In Africa

Not currently open in Africa

As far as public evidence shows, DataAnnotation is not currently open to residents of Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa or Egypt. None of these countries is among the six reportedly named in the sign-up flow, and a Kenyan publication that checked the flow in October 2026 rated the platform unavailable to Kenyans. Some blogs claim it accepts 'most African countries', but those claims are unverified and contradict the sign-up flow. DataAnnotation runs bilingual recruitment pages, including one for Arabic (Egypt), but they do not say whether people living outside the six countries are eligible. Payment is through PayPal only. PayPal's reported partnership with Paga lets Nigerians receive PayPal payments from January 2026, but that does not change eligibility.

Where it hires. Third-party checks of the sign-up flow in October 2026 report that it names the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand as the countries currently accepting applications. Community FAQs have cited the same six since at least 2024. People elsewhere can reportedly create an account and are told they may be contacted if eligibility expands. The company's own pages are inconsistent: some guides note that the FAQ no longer prints a country list, and the About page reportedly cites '50+ countries' (possibly a mix-up with the '50+ languages' used in bilingual recruitment; unconfirmed). Community reports say that applying with a VPN or a false address gets accounts flagged.

Never use a VPN or someone else's identity to get around a country restriction. Platforms verify identity and location, and accounts caught doing it are closed, often with unpaid earnings.

09 · Questions

DataAnnotation, answered

Can I apply to DataAnnotation from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa or Egypt?

Probably not at present. Third-party checks of the sign-up flow report that only the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand are named as accepting applications. You can reportedly still create an account from elsewhere and may be contacted if eligibility expands. Do not use a VPN or a false address, because eligibility depends on where you actually live.

Can I retake the Starter Assessment?

No. You can take it only once, so prepare first and set aside uninterrupted time.

How long does it take to hear back?

The FAQ says approval emails go out within a few days. Many applicants report one to four weeks, and rejections are generally not sent. If you have heard nothing after several weeks, assume you were not accepted.

How does DataAnnotation pay?

Through PayPal only. Earnings clear after a review hold, which workers commonly report as about seven days for hourly work and three for per-task work. You then request a transfer, and the FAQ says the deposit arrives within a few days.

Who runs DataAnnotation?

Surge Labs, Inc., known as Surge AI, which Edwin Chen founded in 2020. The DataAnnotation website does not name its parent company, but court filings and press reports identify Surge Labs as the operator.
