01 · Overview

What Mindrift is

Mindrift is the expert-contributor platform launched and run by Toloka. Writers, editors, software engineers, scientists, clinicians and other specialists apply to individual projects and pass a qualification. They then produce and review the data used to train and test generative AI: challenging prompts, reference answers, fact checks and judgments of model output. The work is freelance and arrives project by project, so it fits best as flexible income alongside a main job or studies.

Commitment. Freelance and remote, with no fixed schedule. Postings describe it as part-time work that fits around a primary job or studies. Projects set deadlines, and how much work is available depends on which projects are running.

02 · The work

What you would actually do

  1. 01Write difficult, field-specific prompts designed to expose model errors
  2. 02Write reference answers with step-by-step reasoning
  3. 03Rate, rank and correct model responses against detailed guidelines
  4. 04Fact-check and edit AI-generated text
  5. 05Write, review and debug code for coding-model training
  6. 06Write and evaluate in languages other than English
  7. 07Review other contributors' tasks, on projects with reviewer or QA roles

03 · Pay & payouts

What it pays, and how

Pay range

When you are paid. Not verified. Contributors describe earnings for accepted tasks being credited to their account and then withdrawn to the chosen payout method, and review can delay when work counts as accepted. The payout cadence and any minimum withdrawal could not be confirmed, so check the payments section of your account before relying on a date.

Pay is set per project. Postings typically state an hourly ceiling ('up to' a given rate per hour) that depends on the role, the contributor's expertise and the project, and it may differ by country. Specialist and coding roles have been advertised with higher ceilings than generalist writing roles. Contributors report that many projects pay per accepted task, priced against an expected completion time. Actual hourly earnings therefore depend on your pace and on how much of your work passes review. Qualification time is reportedly unpaid on many projects. No platform-wide range is given here, because each posting sets its own rate. Read the rate on the specific posting before applying. Contributors report PayPal and Payoneer as payout options; confirm in your account that one works in your country before investing time in a qualification.

04 · Who gets in

Requirements and difficulty

Selective

3 / 4

Screened on background and an interview or exam.

  • Expertise in the posting's field, usually shown by a relevant degree (bachelor's or higher; some roles ask for a master's or PhD) or equivalent professional experience
  • Advanced written English (postings commonly ask for C1 or above), plus native-level command of the target language for language roles
  • Comfort with long, detailed guidelines and with switching between topics
  • A computer, a reliable internet connection and regular time to give
  • Passing the project's qualification

05 · How to get in

From sign-up to first paid task

  1. 1

    Find a matching posting

Find a current Mindrift posting through mindrift.ai or a major job board, where Mindrift roles are also advertised. Each posting names the field, the language and any location limits.

  2. 2

Apply and set up your profile

Submit the application and complete your Mindrift profile with education, experience and languages. Accurate, verifiable credentials matter most for expert tracks.

  3. 3

    Pass the qualification

Study the project guidelines and complete the qualification, typically a test or sample tasks in your field. Expect this to be unpaid unless the posting says otherwise.

  4. 4

    Join a project

Once you qualify, you are added to a project when it has work for your profile. There can be a wait before tasks appear.

  5. 5

    Complete tasks

Work on your own schedule within project deadlines. Submissions are reviewed, and quality scores affect continued access.

  6. 6

    Get paid

Earnings for accepted work are withdrawn to the payout method set in your account. Check the payments section for the options and timing that apply in your country.

06 · Tips

How to get accepted and stay active

  1. 01

Apply only where you can show the credentials a posting asks for. Expert tracks are screened against stated degrees and experience.

  2. 02

Treat the guidelines as the test. Read them in full before starting, keep them open while you work, and follow formatting and style rules exactly.

  3. 03

When writing prompts, aim for questions a strong model gets wrong for a substantive reason, such as a multi-step problem or a subtle point in your field. Avoid tricks and ambiguous wording.

  4. 04

Make reference answers complete and checkable: show the reasoning, state assumptions, and verify every figure and citation.

  5. 05

Do not draft answers with a chatbot unless a task explicitly allows it. Platforms of this kind treat AI-generated submissions as a serious quality violation.

  6. 06

On your first tasks, compare your pace with each task's time estimate. That shows how per-task pay converts into an hourly rate for you.

  7. 07

Act on reviewer feedback promptly and keep quality scores high. Your track record matters for continued access.

07 · The verdict

The good and the not so good

Strengths

  • Launched and run by Toloka, an established AI data company
  • Roles across many fields and languages, not only English writing
  • Remote and flexible; postings pitch it as work that fits around a main job or studies
  • Postings typically state an 'up to' hourly rate, so you can judge a role before applying

Drawbacks

  • Work arrives in project waves, and qualifying does not guarantee tasks
  • Qualification time is reportedly unpaid on many projects
  • Advertised rates are ceilings, and per-task pricing can lower effective hourly pay
  • Strict review: contributors report that low quality scores can end access to a project
  • Eligibility varies by posting; of Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt, only South Africa was confirmed, for one posting

08 · In Africa

Some African countries or projects

In October 2026 a Mindrift posting open only to people living in South Africa (an electrical engineer role listed in Pretoria) was live. Eligibility for Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Egypt was not confirmed. Mindrift recruits internationally and decides eligibility per posting, so check each posting's location and language requirements rather than assume access. Before investing time in a qualification, also confirm that one of the offered payout methods works in your country. PayPal, for example, cannot receive payments in every country.

Where it hires. Recruits remotely in many countries, but each posting sets its own location and language requirements, and some roles are open only to residents of named countries. No complete, current country list could be verified.

Never use a VPN or someone else's identity to get around a country restriction. Platforms verify identity and location, and accounts caught doing it are closed, often with unpaid earnings.

09 · Questions

Mindrift, answered

Is Mindrift legitimate?

Yes. It was launched by and is run by Toloka, an established AI data company. Apply only through mindrift.ai or postings that link to it, and never pay a fee to apply.

Do I need a degree?

Usually, for expert tracks. Postings ask for a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience, and some specialist roles ask for a master's or PhD. Requirements are set per posting, so read the one you are applying to.

How is the work paid?

Each project sets its rate; postings typically show an 'up to' hourly figure. Contributors report that many projects pay per accepted task, priced against an expected completion time, so real hourly earnings depend on your pace and on work passing review.

Is the qualification paid?

Reportedly not, on many projects. Treat it as unpaid time unless the posting says otherwise, and apply only to roles that genuinely match your expertise.

Can I apply from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa or Egypt?

Possibly. In October 2026 one posting open only to South Africa residents was live; the other four countries were not confirmed. Mindrift sets location and language requirements per posting. Before you start, check the posting's eligibility and confirm a payout method that works in your country.
